Our Coping with COVID-19 Program consists of three courses to provide frontline healthcare workers taking care of pregnant people and their babies with skills to support them as they support patients in this time of unprecedented and heightened stress.
- Single Courses which are part of the Coping with COVID-19 Program include: 1) Giving Birth During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Trauma-informed Care to Support Patients, Families, and Staff, 2) one of the Communication Courses and 3) one of the Emotional Support courses, from either the Caring for Pregnant Patients Program or the Caring for Babies Program, depending on whether learners register in the Maternity track or the NICU track. The COVID course itself will always be free, and provides one credit for those who are eligible, thanks to a grant we have received through the 2020 CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act) as indicated below. Standard course charges will apply to those seeking continuing education credits (RN, MD, LCSW, LMFT) for the other two courses. We invite doulas, community health workers, childbirth educators, public health workers, and others for whom we cannot award continuing education credits to take all 3 courses for free.

The Advanced Provider: Caring for Babies Program is a 2-hour continuing education program available to physicians and neonatal nurse practitioners in the NICU. This program is a more condensed and highly referenced version of the original Caring for Babies Program. Topics include: Using Trauma-Informed Care as a Basis for Communicating, Recognizing and Mitigating Parental Distress, Recognizing and Mitigating Infant Distress, and Comprehensive NICU Support (overview of peer support, palliative care, discharge planning, and staff support). This program meets the specifications and requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for education of Neonatal Fellows in behavioral and mental health considerations of patients and their families.

The Annual Refresher Program is a 2-hour continuing education program for NICU nurses and NNPs wishing to maintain annual competencies after initially completing the Caring for Babies program. It contains updated information and resources related to psychosocial support of NICU families, reviews key objectives from the original program, and contains interactive case studies.

Why take our programs?
Our educational programs are effective at improving both staff knowledge and attitudes towards providing psychosocial support to families. In a study that primarily looked at NICU nurses, and published in Advances in Neonatal Care, improvements were significant in six out of seven areas studied and were maintained at a 6-month follow-up period! You can read this study here.
Additionally, these programs provide the opportunity for hospital units to engage in cultural change to become more family-supportive with everybody participating in learning and change at the same time.
Who should take these programs?
We recommend that your entire hospital unit staff take these programs at the same time, from physicians, to front desk staff and everyone else that is a member of the multidisciplinary care team. The programs are designed to educate, raise awareness, develop sensitivity, and increase the skill level of your entire staff regarding providing comprehensive family support for patients and families. To enroll all members of a hospital unit, please contact us at [email protected].
What is the goal of taking a program?
Our programs propose a paradigm shift: Transformation of your NICU from a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to a Neonatal Intensive Parenting Unit, and transforming your maternity units into trauma-informed departments. The focus of our education is to educate and reinforce the concept that in order to improve care and maternal/newborn outcomes, focusing on supporting patients and families is just as important as it is to provide high quality medical care. Our programs also provide practical hands-on tools for how staff can be supported and empowered themselves.

What are unique features of these programs?
The unique features of these courses are as follows:
- Inclusion of the “parent voice:” NICU graduate parents were involved in the original development and publication of the “Recommendations for Psychosocial Support of NICU Parents,” and their involvement has continued through every phase of our courses' creation.
- Inclusion of the "patient voice:" Families who experienced a traumatic labor and/or delivery participated in the development of our maternity courses.
- Learning Assessment Questions: Learning assessment questions are embedded in some of the courses to reinforce learning points.
- Interactive Cases: Many of the courses have interactive cases that tie together learning points in a clinical scenario.
- Resource Weblinks and Downloads: In each course, we provide a variety of links to resources on the web and curated downloads to help you make improvements in areas that you target for change.
- Feedback on student change in knowledge and attitudes: For hospital units taking the Caring for Babies Program, feedback is provided based on analysis of pre- and post-course survey data. Not only will you be able to see where students’ knowledge deficits occurred before taking the course, you will also see what areas need continued emphasis after completing the courses.
How long will the courses be available to our staff, once we start the program?
The program content will be available to individuals for 3 months after registration. For group enrollments, the entire staff will have access to the material based on the time line determined by the organization and MNN-MPN in the purchasing agreement.
What are the tech requirements to be able to access all features of the course?
Customers are responsible for checking with their hospital's Information Technology departments to determine whether they will be able to access all aspects of the course. To do so, browsers need to be the latest version (or the one before that) of Edge, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or a modern mobile browser such as Mobile Safari. Regarding Operating Systems, please use the latest two versions of Windows or Mac. We have many links to websites outside of the course, so please check whether your hospital system's firewalls will allow you to access all of these. The course is also optimized for viewing on mobile phones. Also, learners can access the course from their home computers.
What are the prices of the courses and programs?
- Pricing depends on the credentials of the staff person taking a course, as outlined below, and whether MNN-MPN can award continuing education credits based on those credentials.
- Our COVID-19 course is free and provides 1 credit to those who qualify (RN, MD, LCSW, LMFT).
- Other courses:
- $10 per course/CEU for nurses and nurse practitioners.
- $35 per course/CME for physicians, certified nurse midwives, licensed clinical social workers, psychologists, and licensed marriage and family therapists. [Note: we cannot award CMEs to CNMs, but our certificates should gain credits from their certifying organizations.]
- We currently cannot award CEUs for physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, chaplains, or respiratory therapists, doulas, community health workers, childbirth educators, or public health workers without once of the specified degrees (MD, RN, LCSW, LMFT). These and other non-credit learners (including parent or patient advocates) will receive a certificate of completion. These learners can take the full NICU or Maternity program for a $10 platform administration fee, and the COVID program for free.
Payment Terms:
- Individual registrations will require payment at time of registration. No refunds will be given.
- For bulk registrations, once you determine the number of staff estimated to take the course, we will send you an invoice. We require payment in full before the course is made available for student enrollment. Refunds will not be given for staff members who neglect to start the program, or who start the program, but do not complete all 7 courses included within the time frame allotted.
What about new staff hired after a group enrollment program is closed? Can they take the programs, too?
Yes. Seats to the program can be purchased for all new staff and we encourage departments to budget this program into new hire orientation once staff have completed the program as a whole.
