Enrollment Opportunities for Physicians

Advanced Provider Program ​ ​

This is the condensed 2-hour NICU program for physicians/providers that are eligible for CME credits. It includes: 1- Using trauma-informed care as a basis for communicating with NICU families, 2- Recognizing and mitigating parental distress in the NICU, 3- Recognizing and mitigating infant distress in the NICU, and 4- Comprehensive NICU support (peer support, family-centered developmental care, discharge planning, palliative and bereavement care, and staff support).
​Objectives:
  • Learn the principles of toxic stress and trauma-informed care, as well as practices to improve communication between providers and families.
  • Learn the types of disparate care that can worsen outcomes for NICU babies of color.
  • Understand how to use the term "unexpected news" instead of "bad news" when talking with families.
  • Learn about rates of psychological distress in NICU parents, how parental emotional distress affects infant outcomes, how parents' distress may manifest in their behavior, how to screen for emotional distress, how to provide layered levels of support, and strategies for mitigating parental distress.
  • Learn how a NICU infant's experience of stress may impact their current and future mental and physical health.
  • Understand how to identify and reduce stress in the infant, why the infant-parent relationship and parental engagement with their infant in the NICU is critical, and how parents can be supported with staff in their relationship and engagement with their infants.
  • Learn the benefits of peer-to-peer support to parents and the types of programs that can be offered to parents.
  • Learn how to identify which families may need extra attention at the time of discharge planning; the benefits of having a NICU palliative care program; and ways to lower the incidence of burnout in NICU staff.

Identify risk factors for burnout, compassion fatigue and secondary traumatic stress syndrome and how to mitigate them; adverse effects of working in intensive care; elements of self-care; and how to create a supportive staff culture.

​Coping with COVID: Trauma-Informed Care for Frontline NICU and Pediatric Providers During the COVID-19 Pandemic

This is a 3-course program to support frontline care providers with essential skills in providing psychosocial and emotional support to patients and staff during the COVID-19  pandemic.
